Opened in 2000, the Melbourne Aquarium is a sophisticated entertainment and hospitality complex spanning five levels. It includes an oceanarium, 12m diameter acrylic tube coral and ocean tank, various display tanks, a cutting edge multimedia centre, restaurant/café and multi-use spaces. Sandover Pinder managed the design and documentation for this project, in conjunction with Peddle Thorp Architects. This required creative solutions to overcome significant challenges associated with the limited site, which is immediately adjacent to the Yarra River in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Two levels of the complex were designed to sit below the level of the river, which required substantial piling, dewatering, site decontamination and site stabilisation during construction.
